New UK Security Standard Places Greater Focus on Complete Door and Window Performance

Updated PAS 24 requirements highlight the role of hardware, profiles, glazing and installation in overall security

The latest version of the UK security standard PAS 24:2022+A1:2024 is placing greater emphasis on the security performance of complete doorsets and windows, reflecting changes in testing methods and evolving approaches to residential security.

In an industry article published by Glass Times on September 16, Yale principal design engineer Clement Whittle explained that the updated standard is intended to keep testing requirements aligned with modern burglary methods and reduce the gap between laboratory testing and real-world performance.

Under the updated requirements, residential doors and windows—including front doors, patio and sliding doors, French doors, folding doors and many residential windows—are tested against a wider range of potential attack methods, alongside established forced-entry, impact and lock-manipulation tests.

The updated approach also places greater responsibility on manufacturers to provide clear installation instructions and specify the hardware required for the tested configuration. Products assembled on site must correspond with the tested configuration, while manufacturers need to maintain traceability between the tested product and the final installation.

One important point highlighted by the article is that security performance is increasingly viewed as a property of the complete doorset or window system, rather than of an individual component.

Hardware, profiles, glazing and installation all contribute to the final security performance of a product. This makes system-level testing and specification increasingly important for manufacturers, fabricators and installers.

The development also has implications for hardware suppliers. As door and window manufacturers work to meet updated security requirements, the compatibility and tested performance of locks, multipoint systems and other hardware components become increasingly important during product development and specification.

For the global door and window hardware industry, the trend points toward a closer connection between hardware design, system testing and compliance.
