US Builders' Hardware Body Tightens Standards for Cabinet Hardware, Hinges, and Door Controls
Five standards revised in one of the largest single updates of the current standards cycle
The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association, the body that writes performance standards for many of the locks, hinges, and door closers fitted across North America, has issued revisions to five of its ANSI-approved standards, marking one of the most significant single batches of updates in the current standards cycle.
The revisions, announced following BHMA's 2026 spring meeting, cover cabinet hardware, hinges, door controls and other builders' hardware categories. BHMA is the principal organisation accredited by the American National Standards Institute to develop and maintain performance standards for locks, closers, exit devices and other builders' hardware in North America. It has been writing and maintaining these standards since 1983, and its portfolio now covers 45 separate product categories.
The announcement comes as the US building products sector faces a confluence of pressures — from the post-pandemic surge in renovation spending to increasingly stringent building codes and growing demand for products that can demonstrate verified performance through third-party certification. The BHMA certification programme, which requires manufacturers to submit products to independent laboratory testing, provides one of the industry's primary mechanisms for that verification. Products that pass may carry the "BHMA Certified" mark and are listed in the association's Certified Products Directory.
The five revised standards are available for purchase through BHMA's website, with each accompanied by a "Hardware Highlights" summary document that translates the technical language of the full standard into practical guidance for specifiers, contractors, and procurement officers.
Inside A156.9: what the new cabinet hardware standard demands
The most detailed of the five revisions is ANSI/BHMA A156.9-2026, the American National Standard for Cabinet Hardware. The document establishes requirements for nearly one hundred distinct types of cabinet hardware, including hinges, knobs, pulls, catches, shelf rests, standards and brackets, rotating shelves, and track with guides for sliding panels.
The standard is built around three assessment pillars: durability, strength, and consistent terminology. For durability, products are subjected to cycle testing that varies by hardware type — certain Grade 1 products, for example, may be required to survive up to 100,000 open-and-close cycles without degradation. For strength, the standard applies a range of static loads, torques, and impact tests. Pulls must support a 75-pound force (lbf) test load without chipping, disassembly or breakage of either the component or its mounting screws.
The standard also contains a full lexicon of cabinet hardware terminology, a feature that BHMA argues is as important to the supply chain as the physical tests. A definition such as "concealed hinge: a hinge installed in such a way that it cannot be seen from the outside when the cabinet door is in a closed position" enables architects to specify precisely and manufacturers to tender accurately — reducing the ambiguity that has historically generated disputes between suppliers and buyers. BHMA provides a numbering system for product categorisation within the standard, covering type numbers for semi-concealed hinges, bottom-edge mounted drawer slides, and other hardware types.
On sustainability, BHMA notes that cabinet hardware may contribute to building sustainability through verified durability and material characteristics including recycled content and recyclability. The association has also developed Product Category Rules that will further define sustainability requirements and guide life cycle assessments and environmental product declarations.
Why it matters: from a Washington trade body to the building site
The significance of a standards revision issued by a Washington-based trade association is not immediately obvious to anyone standing in a hardware aisle. But the BHMA standards — and the certification programme that enforces them — are embedded in a remarkable proportion of North American construction.
When a commercial architect writes a specification that requires "BHMA Grade 1" hardware, they are invoking a chain of testing and verification that begins with the ANSI/BHMA standard, passes through an independent testing laboratory, and ends with a certified product listed in a publicly searchable directory. When a building inspector checks that the door closer fitted to a fire door in a high-rise apartment block matches the fire test certificate, the underlying performance data will often trace back to a BHMA standard. And when a facilities manager in a hospital corridor replaces a worn lever handle, the specification that helps ensure the replacement will survive the footfall of a thousand patients a day is — again — frequently derived from BHMA standards.
The association's reach extends beyond hardware into the building codes themselves. BHMA has participated in the code development processes of the model building and fire codes for decades, bringing industry technical knowledge about ANSI/BHMA standards into code discussions and supporting the integration of ANSI/BHMA standards into building and fire codes to enhance life safety and security. Its Codes in Context report series, launched in 2022, translates changes to the International Building Code into plain-English summaries for door hardware specifiers — a service that has become increasingly valuable as code cycles have accelerated.
The association also operates at the intersection of hardware standards and disability access law. Its standards are frequently used in support of compliance with accessibility requirements related to the Americans with Disabilities Act, meaning that the force required to open a door, the shape and clearance of a lever handle, and the closing speed of a door closer are all influenced — directly or indirectly — by BHMA standards.
