Is it necessary to have fire safety certification for smart locks?

Previously, the Lock World launched a questionnaire survey on whether it is necessary to conduct fire safety certification for smart locks. The majority of participants in the survey were professionals in the smart lock industry, including smart lock manufacturers, dealers, locksmiths, suppliers, etc., totaling more than 300 people.

According to the research results, 84% of practitioners believe that fire safety certification is necessary for smart locks, while 16% of practitioners believe that fire safety certification is not necessary. From the research results, it can be seen that most practitioners, from the perspective of user safety, support intelligent locks for fire prevention certification.

According to the "Standard for Fire Protection Design of High-rise Civil Buildings", each unit on the 18th and below floors is equipped with an evacuation staircase leading to the roof. The stairs between units are connected through the roof, and there is a firewall between units. The door of the unit is a Class A fire door, and if it exceeds 18 floors, each unit is equipped with an evacuation staircase leading to the roof. The adjacent unit stairs on each floor above 18 floors are connected through balconies or recesses (the roof can be disconnected). The unit on the 18th and below floors is equipped with a firewall between units, and the door is a Class A fire door. The width of the window wall and the height of the window sill wall are greater than 1.2m and are non combustible unit residential units.

The domestic fire door industry is very mature, but due to the fact that smart locks are emerging products, relevant standards and regulations do not have clear provisions on their fire performance. Moreover, smart locks are currently mostly used in the aftermarket, so they are not within the scope of fire inspection. Therefore, many smart lock brands do not attach importance to the fire performance of smart locks.

In order to raise the attention of major brands to the fire prevention performance of smart locks and promote the improvement of the fire prevention performance of smart locks in China, relevant domestic institutions are also actively drafting relevant standards for the fire prevention performance of smart locks. For example, the Fire Products Working Committee of the China Consumer Products Quality and Safety Promotion Association organized relevant experts, scholars and enterprises to formulate and draft the group standard for electronic fire locks. This standard fills the gap in the fire prevention field of smart locks in China, solves the technical problems of fire escape, rescue and fire resistance performance of electronic fire locks, and puts forward technical requirements and parameters such as fire escape function and fire integrity, which should be scientific, forward-looking, progressive and operable.
